Many Swedish companies - consulting engineers as well as contractors and suppliers - are active in the air, water and wastewater sector and have extensive experience of undertaking important assignments in Sweden and abroad. In addition, Swedish water protection management authorities and municipal sewage and water works have been active internationally in recent years.

One of the best projects financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and the World Bank was achieved in Gdansk, Poland: Regional Municipal Waste Management Project - Feasibility Study and Environmental Assessment Report for a Waste Collection and Disposal System.
Description of the Project: Elaboration of waste management system based on EU directives including selective collection, central biological treatment, waste fuel processing and waste to energy facilities, hazardous waste treatment and sanitary landfills. Financial analysis that includes establishing investment priorities and financing options with international agencies. Recommendation for institutional arrangements. 
The consultancy has been led by VAI VA-Projekt AB for the Gdansk Region Environmental Department.
The service was mainly the comprehensive feasibility study, development of a Waste Management Strategy for seven towns in the Gdansk region as a national pilot project.
Strategy includes waste minimization, recycling and energy recovery. Scenarios of mitigation of present and future waste production. Simulations for different strategies including environmental impact, social effects assessments and fee calculations. Financial analysis, preliminary design of waste collection and treatment facilities. Recommendations for and execution of public information programmes.
